SAFARI dinotefuran__PRO STRENGTH__insecticide “BIG GUNS” used by pros SYSTEMIC
Problems with scale bugs on orchids? Use this! Pros do!
    Dinotefuran (Safari) systemic insecticide
    SHORT DESCRIPTION:
Safari/dinotefuran is a systemic insecticide that works extremely well, and is the go-to choice of orchid professionals for scale and other difficult pests.  Usually this pesticide is only sold in bulk and costs around 0 per lb.  We’re offering it here for small growers in amounts suitable to small collections.  One gram of Safari/dinotefuran dissolved in one liter (or quart) of water is enough to spray 100 sq. ft. of plants twice over two weeks.
    LONG AND DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
As your orchid collection grows, you will eventually run into some insect pest problem.
There is much wailing and gnashing of teeth and sky-is-falling posts and articles about nasty pests infesting precioussss orchids, and plenty of
    low-quality photos of various bugs
to further confuse matters, making proper pesticide selection a confusing and difficult choice.
I’ve tried many insecticides, and they all do a reasonable job.  But most insecticides work only if sprayed on top of the offending critters, which isn’t too bad if you’ve only got five or ten plants, as it’s not too time consuming to spray into cracks and crevices.  But when your collection hits a threshold of about 25 plants, ensuring adequate coverage becomes a pain.
So what you want is a systemic insecticide.  Safari/dinotefuran is the best.
Certain infestations, such as scale, are difficult to treat with topical insecticides as the scale has a kind of waxy “armor” that repels stuff that’s supposed to kill it.  And when scale (or other bugs) are hiding under leaf axils or bracts or other hard-to-reach areas, they simply don’t get hit with the topical pesticide.  But a systemic insecticide, because it’s water soluble, is absorbed by the plant and distributed throughout so that when a bug sucks the plant’s sap, it gets a bellyful of some of the insecticide that ends up killing it.
This is very, very satisfying to an orchid lover.
Safari/dinotefuran works on all the common orchid pests (mealies, aphids, thrips, mites, scale, etc.)
    The Most Annoying Orchid Pest
The most annoying bug in orchids is boisduval scale.  It seems to strike fear in the hearts of many people writing about this on the internet, but the
professional growers I’ve canvassed about dealing with scale all recommend Safari.  Such is Safari/dinotefuran's effectiveness that scale doesn’t seem to faze these pro growers.  Well, they’re pros, after all...
As with all pesticides, you should not use one type exclusively, but rotate between two or three.  Some types are easy to get, such as Bayer 3-in-1 with imidacloprid (* see footnote for important info on this!), or Sevin (in a red bottle at Home Depot).
But if you want the big guns, Safari/dinotefuran is it.
The problem with Safari/dinotefuran is that it is only sold in bulk at 0 for 2.5 lbs.  How is a grower with only a few plants or a small collection supposed to get this stuff affordably?
Well, we’re offering small amounts of Safari/dinotefuran for small collections.  One gram in two liters (or quart) of water can easily cover 100 - 200 sq. ft. of growing area.  For those who have a hard time visualizing plants and area, you can easily cram 5 - 10 plants in just ONE square foot.
    HOW TO USE
    Get a 1-quart spray bottle from Target/Home Depot/Walmart/etc.
Put 0.5 gram of the dinotefuran/Safari powder into the bottle.  So use about half the 1-gram powder.  It DOESN’T have to be exact.
Fill up with water, screw the spray nozzle on securely and shake.  It dissolves very easily.
Spray liberally over plants and exposed roots.  Watch the bugs die and rejoice!
    Repeat spraying two weeks later.
Avoid getting the product on your skin, eyes, nose, mouth, etc.  Take sensible precautions such as wearing gloves and spraying your plants in a well-ventilated area.
    * Read the label carefully on the Bayer 3-in-1 product!  In some places, Bayer sells a 3-in-1 in the exact same color bottle that DOESN’T contain imidacloprid!
