The Incense Cedar can become quite stately if given enough time, the largest known is 13 feet in diameter.
The incense cedar (Calocedrus decurrens) is native to the mountains of the far west. The natural range extends from near the Columbia River in Oregon south to northern Baja California in Mexico and east to western Nevada. The incense cedars in the wild thrive in a wide variety of conditions. The annual rainfall average within the natural range varies widely at from 15 inches per year up to 80 inches per year. This indicates that the species can tolerate from near desert conditions to near rainforest conditions. Incense cedars in the wild grow from an elevation of 2000 feet up to 7000 feet and to a height of 150 feet. The shape is conical and symmetrical. In older trees the trunks are tapered from a broad base with trunk diameters of up to 7 feet. The bark is thick and fibrous, a cinnamon-red in color, and furrowed. The heartwood is a reddish brown, soft, light, fine grained, and pleasantly aromatic. The wood contains substances that retard decay and repel moths. The wood is traditionally used for cedar chests, siding, interior paneling, shingles, decking, pencils, and fence posts. The foliage of the incense cedars is a yellowish green in color arranged in flattened sprays. The foliage is aromatic lacing the nearby air with a pleasant scent on a warm day.
This is one of our favorite species in the false cedar group of cypress trees. Native to Northern California and Western Oregon, Incense-cedar grows in a wider array of situations than any other conifer we've seen. From bogs where no other tree will grow because of root rot and low (acidic) pH to rocky ridge tops where water is available only immediately after rainfall,
    Calocedrus decurrens
always looks healthy. We have found it growing in the calcium-devoid serpentine soils of the Klamath mountains where the only other conifers growing are Jeffery and Western White Pines, as well as growing on pure limestone with an over abundance of calcium and high (basic) pH. Additionally, the Incense-cedar will grow in full baking sun on a southern exposure or in the low light conditions under an established tree canopy. If you ever have trouble growing trees, this is the species to try.
In the landscape, Incense-cedar is great for creating fast growing forests or hedges. Unlike most conifers, we have found this tree to retain its lower branches for a very long time until they are trimmed. The foliage is very dense and thick and the trees will take regular pruning very well.
Incense cedar is native to California and other western States from central Oregon to Baja California. It inhabits mountain slopes in both coastal and inland ranges, with its best development occurring in the central Sierra Nevada at elevations between 2,000-8,200 ft., on slightly acid sandy loam soils in meadow habitats.
The Incense cedar is a handsome and tough coniferous tree with rich green foliage and a uniform shape. While not widely known, a number of specimens can be found growing throughout the Inland Empire where it provides a bold conifer character. It grows best on sandy loam soils with moderate water during winter and spring, and periodic deep watering during summer.
Over the years, this species has been used for a variety of landscape purposes, including street and lawn trees, in parks and in residential and commercial landscapes. It is slow growing and well suited to civic and institutional landscapes where it can be appreciated for many years as it matures.
