    Description
Antique 18th century Indian solid bronze jaldhara patra - a ritual Lingam dripping vessel for performing abhiseka – rudrabhiseka cast and chased in the form of the sacred Nandi Bull.
It has a broad round opening at one end, with two suspension loops end of the Nandi head at the other with the holes pierced in the mouth/snout.
and is pierced at the other, at the end of the cow’s mouth/snout.
Such a vessel would have been suspended on chain or cord with the cow head pointing down over a lingam which is representative of Shiva. It would have been filled with a sacred liquid offering :milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, panchamrita, sesame oil, sandalwood paste, rose or coconut water and all kinds of fruit juices or some other similar mixture which would then drip, drop by drop, from the cow’s mouth/snout over the lingam.
Nandi a Siva’s vehicle represents strength, faith, and constancy in belief. Images of Nandi often sit directly outside a shrine to Shiva, facing the deity. Often an image of Nandi, the sacred bull on which Shiva rides, faces the linga. Nandi signifies single-minded devotion and the peaceful strength of faith. Nandi is the protector and guard of all Shiva Temples.
Vessels such as the present one used to be hung over a Shiva lingam standing in the center of every Shiva temple as a symbol of the god Shiva.
A very rare, beautifully made Indian Hindu ritual object, from a Shiva temple in India. With good, old patina, the surface is smooth and soft from ritual use
