Description
Pack of 6 unused match books wrapped in original plastic.Cover has a streamlined train engine and Erie logo.
Back cover says "Erie Railroad - Mark of progress in railroading."
Inside is a route map from New Jersey to Illinois.
Since the map shows the route all the way to Chicago, the matchbooks must have been produced between 1941 and 1960. We bought them at an estate sale about 20 years ago.
"The Erie Railroad was a railroad that operated in the northeastern United States, originally connecting New York City with Lake Erie. It expanded west to Chicago with its 1941 merger with the former Atlantic and Great Western Railroad, also known as the New York Pennsylvania and Ohio Railroad. Its mainline route proved influential in the development and economic growth of the Southern Tier. On October 17, 1960, the Erie merged with the former rival Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad to form the Erie Lackawanna Railroad."
The striker is on the front of the matchbook. This is another sign that the matchbooks are vintage, because in 1973 a federal regulation mandated that the strikers be moved from the front to the back.
