    Description

10 Mature Ostrich Ferns Fiddlehead Fern Perennial Matteuccia Struthiopteris Individual Bare Roots.
Our Ostrich Ferns come to you as bare root rhizomes, deadheaded of this seasons growth for ease of shipping and affordability. These plants are very hardy and will have a small regrowth before going dormant in the Fall, returning to their full size Spring of 2022. This is a perfect time for planting, giving them plenty of time to establish before fully returning next season.
The growing nature of Ostrich Ferns is quite impressive reaching 3 to 6 feet in height, forming clumps of fronds from the planted rhizomes which return every year. They add a soft atmosphere in shady areas of your landscape and gardens, and once established can reach 5 to 8 feet in width, forming a showy display to fill empty space. Looks nice as a backdrop for other plants in your scenery.
Also known as Fiddlehead Ferns and used in early Spring as an edible vegetable, harvested before the fronds completely unfurl to their full height. There are many recipes online providing information on preparing Fiddleheads as a food source. For this reason they make a great addition to permaculture gardens.
